History
In the late nineteenth century, Henry Cutter of Philadelphia's Cutter's Electrical Manufacturing Company built the first "inverse time element" circuit breaker. In 1917, the company, now known as I-T-E Circuit Breaker Company, developed the first shock-hardened circuit breaker. By the 1960s, I-T-E Imperial Corporation was known for the quality and cost-effectiveness of their innovative, high-performance military and commercial maritime products.
For a century, the company's reputation was made at sea - aboard U.S. Navy combatant ships. There, electrical equipment must be unquestionably reliable and perform under the harshest conditions. Today virtually every conventional and nuclear-powered vessel in the U.S. Navy active fleet is equipped with SPD Electrical Systems products.
Now, as a part of L-3 Communications Power & Control Systems Group, the company brings that tradition of excellence to today's demanding commercial industrial and transportation markets. In its 165,000-square foot facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, L-3 SPD Electrical Systems houses advanced computer design systems, computer-controlled punch presses and machining centers and all the latest equipment for sheet metal fabrication, welding and plating.
As part of Power & Control Systems Group, L-3 SPD Electrical Systems is able to utilize the complete resources of SPD and its subsidiaries:
- SPD Switchgear, a provider of electrical power control and distribution products for commercial, industrial and military applications
- Power Paragon, specializing in power-conversion technology and advanced power systems for mission-critical applications
- Henschel, supplier of field-proven, technologically advanced electronic ship control and internal communications systems
- PacOrd, offering multifaceted DoD services, installation and integration of shipboard combat systems worldwide
In 1998, Power & Control Systems Group was acquired by L-3 Communications, a leading merchant supplier to aerospace, military and commercial primes. Based in New York, L-3 Communications serves the Department of Defense, select U.S. government intelligence agencies, aerospace and defense prime contractors and commercial telecommunication and cellular customers.
