L-3 Power Systems Group continues to develop innovative new approaches to power conversion, creating solutions that are increasingly quiet, efficient, compact and reliable.

Air-Cooled Frequency Converters (ACFC) (Products & Services Page)

L-3 Power System Group's Air-Cooled Frequency Converters (ACFC) represent the next leap forward in refined, stable and reliable power delivery to central and distributed 400 Hz systems such as weapons, fire control, ECM, sonar and avionics. These ACFCs meet the most demanding military standards for shock, vibration, EMI and noise. L-3 Power Systems Group ACFCs feature modular construction for ease of maintenance and incorporate state-of-the-art IGBT technology. The ACFC family includes units with ratings of 12 kW, 75 kW, 100 kW, 125 kW, 150 kW, 175 kW and 288 kW. L-3 Power Systems Group ACFCs have been selected as frequency converters of choice for some of the world's newest, most technologically advanced military ships such as the Spanish navy's F-100 AEGIS destroyer and U.S. Navy's LPD-17 Class Amphibious Transport ships.

Power Protection (Contact us for more information.)

The L-3 Power Systems Group Solid State Interrupter (SSI) is a unique and innovative electronic circuit breaker which can be programmed to adjust the trip current, thereby providing the flexibility of utilizing a common configuration in various applications. Installed between the power source and critical loads, the SSI trips on faults due to overcurrent, open SCR and open fuse. In addition, the SSI is adjustable for various time/current overload characteristics and provides a remote operation. The SSI is designed for 900 amps continuous conduction in a 50°C environment, 450 VAC ±20%, 3-phase, 60 Hz and 120 to 400 VAC at 20 to 50 Hz applications. The unit is self-cooled by internal fans and qualified to meet military environmental requirements.

SABT Switches (Products & Services Page)

L-3 Power Systems Group's Static Automatic Bus Transfer (SABT) switches use silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) power-switching elements to automatically transfer critical loads from a primary power source to an alternate power source in the event of interruption or abnormal conditions. It does this in less than four milliseconds (4/1000th of a second), infinitely faster than electromechanical switches, so that it appears seamless to even the most sophisticated systems. L-3 Power Systems Group SABT switches can be custom-programmed for use in any shipboard application. These SABT switches are the only solid-state programmable units to have been QPL-certified, and are compatible with MIL-STD-1399 and STANAG 1008 standards. They also are MIL-S-901 grade A shock and MIL-STD-167-I vibration qualified. L-3 Power Systems Group offers bulkhead or deck-mounted units in 60 amp-400 amp ranges. The L-3 Power Systems Group solid-state programmable SABT has been selected as the transfer switch of choice for some of the world's newest, most technologically advanced military ships such as the United States Navy's DDG51 AEGIS Class Destroyer, CVN68 Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers and the Spanish Navy's F100 AEGIS Destroyer.

Power Quality (Products & Services Page)

With the increasing sensitivity of modern electronics, there is an ever-growing demand for "clean," quality power. To meet these requirements, L-3 Power Systems Group focuses much of its engineering efforts into developing leading-edge technology for power factor correction and harmonic noise reduction. These power conditioners "flatten" generator voltage and make the power system more efficient and noise-free. L-3 Power Systems Group power-conditioning technology saves fuel, reduces the need for auxiliary generators and allows innovative ship designs that reduce size and weight.

Other Power Technologies for the Future

L-3 Power Systems Group is actively developing a range of high-energy and pulsed-power solutions that go beyond theory and into real-world applications like electromagnetic launching, magnetic levitation vehicles and electric guns. Electric drive and motor control technology is also among the company's areas of expertise for such applications as electric tanks and high-speed rail trains.

Airborne Products

Power Converters (Products & Services Page)

Sophisticated L-3 Power Systems Group converters have been installed on a wide range of aircraft, from the Fairchild Metro III commuter aircraft to the B-1 bomber. The company was among the first to apply 270 VDC technology in aircraft power-system design, realizing the real-world promise of this technology in efficiency and weight improvement. L-3 Power Systems Group's knowledge of aircraft and missile systems was a driving factor in the development of a family of high-density, low-profile DC-DC converters. The combination of low noise and excellent transient response makes these DC-DC converters ideal for sensitive analog or digital systems that could easily be disturbed by conducted or radiated noise. L-3 Power Systems Group can also modify converter designs to meet exact customer requirements.

Transformer Rectifier Units (TRUs) (Products & Services Page)

Some of the most flexible and reliable transformer rectifier units (TRUs) in use today are the results of L-3 /Power Systems Group ingenuity. L-3 Power Systems Group has been commissioned by the U. S. Navy to design a 200 amp TRU for future helicopter applications. Regulated TRUs are also available for military and civil aircraft. Smaller and lighter than comparable models, L-3 Power Systems Group aircraft TRUs are specialized to meet customer-specific application needs in 40 amp, 50 amp, 150 amp and 200 amp versions.

Power Inverters (Products & Services Page)

L-3 Power Systems Group power inverters are specifically designed to meet the heavy usage and harsh-environment challenges of applications like combat and support helicopters. To ensure reliability, L-3 Power Systems Group engineers design in safeguards against failure. Inverter electronics withstand most anticipated system failures, including short circuits, overloads and loss of cooling air. A number of L-3 Power Systems Group inverters are included in military Qualified Parts Lists (QPL), and many of these are sole-source items.

Power Magnetics (Products & Services Page)

The high quality of L-3 Power Systems Group magnetics technology can be seen in the B-1 bomber program. The company provided all of the power transformers for every aircraft in the program - delivering them on time with a 100 percent acceptance rate. All L-3 Power Systems Group transformers, as well as coils, chokes and other customer devices, are designed to the requirements of MIL-T-27. The company's early custom systems were designed for customers such as Martin Marietta on the Skylab program, and the Rockwell team on the B-1B and Minuteman. More recent designs include a multi-output AC-DC converter for Chrysler Technologies. In all custom solutions, Power Systems Group strives to reduce cost while fully complying with customer requirements.
